UC Berkeley Professors Share Environmental Expertise in DC

June 26, 2019

UC Berkeley Professor Solomon Hsiang (pictured above) recently testified before the House Budget Committee on the “Costs of Climate Change.” Dr. Hsiang discussed the economic impact of climate change, including his finding that low income regions and individuals tend to be more adversely impacted by climate change and therefore it will likely widen existing economic inequality. His testimony starts at 22:36 on this webcast.

UC Berkeley Professor George Roderick (pictured left) participated in a Congressional briefing on invasive species and wildfire hosted by the House Invasive Species Caucus, co-chaired by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), and the Reduce Risks from Invasive Species Coalition (RRISC). Dr. Roderick’s presentation focused on strategies for managing both plant and animal invasive species to reduce wildfires in forests, shrublands, and grasslands in Western forests. He also highlighted the impact social and environmental changes have on landscape and efforts to safeguard homes and communities from wildfire.

UC Berkeley Associate Adjunct Professor Patrick Gonzalez spoke to several members of Congress at a special briefing for the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition. Dr. Gonzalez shared his research on the impact of climate change on our national parks. Pictured Right: Professor Gonzalez measuring a Ponderosa Pine in Yosemite National Park.
