Institute for Parks Welcomes Justin Brashares as a Faculty Affiliate

The University of California, Berkeley, Institute for Parks, People, and Biodiversity welcomes Dr. Justin Brashares, Professor of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and George R. and Wilhelmina M. Goertz Distinguished Professor for Wildlife Management, as a new Faculty Affiliate.

Justin Brashares is a wildlife biologist who conducts research examining the ecology and socio-economics of wildlife and people to develop interdisciplinary strategies for biodiversity conservation. His research, published in Science and other journals, has produced new results on community and population ecology of wildlife in altered ecosystems, causes and ecological consequences of wildlife utilization, and landscape planning and monitoring for wildlife conservation.

Justin conducted his graduate research in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, and he and his colleagues have centered their work in parks ever since. This research includes studies of wildlife, conservation, and local livelihoods in and around parks in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Argentina, Columbia, Panama, India, Philippines, Canada, and the U.S., including Point Reyes National Seashore and Channel Islands, Lassen Volcanic, and Yosemite National Parks.

Faculty Affiliates form the core of Institute work, directing innovative research and developing solutions for conservation in national parks and other protected areas.
