Nearly a century ago, the University of California, Berkeley, provided an early home for National Park Service scientists, most notably George Meléndez Wright.
We will celebrate this history on Monday, May 5, 2025, 11 AM - 12 PM in Hilgard Hall, Room 304, the 1934-1935 office of George Meléndez Wright. Thanks to the current occupant, Professor Ian Wang, for opening his doors for us.
George Meléndez Wright (b. 1904, d. 1936), earned a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1927. Wright and colleagues established the first ecological science division in the U.S. National Park Service, based at UC Berkeley in Hilgard Hall, Room 213 (re-numbered 205) from 1931 to 1933, and Room 328 (re-numbered 304) from 1934 to 1935. We are unveiling new commemorative door plates and Braille panels for the two rooms.
The celebration will feature remembrances from Jerry Emory, author of the biography George Meléndez Wright: The Fight for Wildlife and Wilderness in the National Parks, and an introduction from Dr. Patrick Gonzalez, previously Principal Climate Change Scientist of the U.S. National Park Service.
We’ll also serve local Berkeley snacks and enjoy free time for people to discuss science and conservation in the national parks.
The event is open to all. We look forward to seeing you!
